Biography:
Sha Wujing, often called Sandy or Monk Sha, is a prominent character in the classic Chinese novel *Journey to the West*. He makes his first appearance during Tang Sanzang's journey west, after encountering Tripitaka being chased in the Flowing Sand River in the eighteenth chapter.
Originally a celestial general, he was banished to Earth and transformed into a monstrous river ogre as punishment for breaking a jade cup during a heavenly banquet. He dwelled in the Flowing Sand River, terrorizing travelers and subsisting on human flesh.
Guanyin, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, convinces him to atone for his sins by protecting the Tang monk Tripitaka on his pilgrimage to retrieve Buddhist scriptures. Accepting this task, he becomes Tripitaka's third disciple, joining Sun Wukong and Zhu Bajie.
He is known for his quiet, dependable nature and unwavering loyalty. He carries Tripitaka's luggage and is a reliable, if somewhat less flamboyant, member of the pilgrimage. Upon completion of the journey, he is rewarded for his service and elevated back to celestial status, becoming an Arhat.
